Bicycle and pedestrian
accidents are the leading cause of injury and death for children in the
upper elementary grades. This summer the Safety Council will sponsor a
bicycle safety education class for children entering the fourth, fifth and
sixth grades in the fall. Children will be instructed in proper sizing of a
bicycle, proper fit of a helmet, right-of-way rules at intersections and
visual skills as well as general bicycle and pedestrian safety rules and laws. This class actually prepares children as future automobile drivers. Officer Phil Salm of the Middletown Division of Police teaches the sessions which include hands-on classroom instruction and driving the bicycles on a skills course. The bicycles used for the course were provided with funding from the Middletown Community Foundation. Fee for the week long instruction is $10.00. Each child keeps the help they use throughout the week. Children should dress appropriately in tennis shoes and shorts for safe riding on the bikes and should have some bicycle experience. A graduation ceremony will be held on Friday where children receive a certificate of completion and a bicycle driver's license. Registration for the morning or afternoon class begins in May. Class size is limited so call early to assure getting the class of your choice. Call 423-9758 to register. Bike Camp is held at Highview Elementary School - 106 S. Highview Rd. Middletown. |
